3D printing technology helps Hebei Engineering University Hospital complete orthopedic surgery

On May 24, 2022, He Jinglan, director of the Department of Orthopaedic V of the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Engineering University, led his team to successfully apply 3D printing technology to treat a patient with an open fracture of the right ankle joint with dislocation (Pilon).

The patient, Zhang, suffered a high-energy trauma resulting in a comminuted fracture of the right ankle joint with dislocation, and was admitted to the hospital to actively improve relevant examinations. Due to the heavy trauma, the swelling of the affected area was obvious, and the fracture comminution was serious, Director He Jinglan of the Department of Orthopedic V immediately organized the doctors to discuss the treatment plan. Applying 3D printing technology to assist orthopedic surgery, the preoperative 3D printing model was used to analyze the fracture and simulate the surgery, which enabled the surgery to be performed according to the original preoperative plan. Brother Zhang said, "This 3D printing technology is so amazing, the doctor took the model to tell me about my condition, and I, an unprofessional, could understand."

He, the director of Orthopaedic Department 5, introduced: traditional orthopaedic surgery is performed only based on imaging results and the surgeon's clinical experience, which is not only not accurate, but also traumatic and takes a long time to operate, while the model made by 1:1 3D printing technology can be set up in advance for surgical access, measurement of internal fixation, and preoperative simulation of the reset steps on the model, which is more accurate and intuitive. This series of preoperative preparation saves time, reduces intraoperative blood loss, further reduces the risk of surgery, and improves the accuracy of surgery.
Under the leadership of Director He, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery V has created a more comprehensive team with more skills to provide treatment services to the public, so that patients can enjoy advanced, precise and personalized orthopaedic treatment at their doorstep and make smooth recovery of more difficult cases possible.
